Today was another amazing day here in Kentucky! We went to Mammoth Cave National Park and stayed in one section of the cave for about 7 hours. We learned a whole lot about caves from our awesome tour guide, Rick. We also helped remove almost 300 ft of dead high-voltage wire from about a mile back in the cave.

For dinner tonight we introduced everyone to Sonic! They were very generous and gave us some free food and drinks, which was great. We also played a quick game of Mafia in the Walmart parking lot and tonight is our game night at the church!

We’re really looking forward to tomorrow, when we go survey some caves and then go horse back riding. Check back for more info tomorrow!

So we got to Horse Cave, KY at about noon yesterday, and were very excited by all of the sights, including DinoWorld and the downtown. After taking a quick tour of Horse Cave, we realized that our housing was not in Horse Cave, but rather in Glasgow, which was another 20 min. away. Upon arriving at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, we met our AMAZING site contact, Peggy and our housing contact, Freddie. That was followed by a trip to Mammoth Cave National Park, including a historic tour of part of the longest cave system in the world! We also learned about some of the history of the area from Peggy, and saw some deer in the road on our way home.

After our park tour, we went to Walmart for our grocerie

s and some supplies, but while most of us were shopping, the bathroom in our sleeping area started overflowing! So when we returned from shopping, half of us cooked dinner and half of us cleaned up toilet overflow. It was a crazy and hectic evening, but it ended up being a lot of fun and quite the bonding experience.

This morning, Peggy met us at 830, and we went to the American Cave Conservation Museum to do some service. This involved cleaning up an area for a future museum exhibition, and cleaning off the pathway in Hidden River Cave. The cave was absolutely amazing, and the river inside was really high and running fast.

Following our service, we took a trip to Kentucky Down Under/Kentucky Caverns for a personal tour of the caves by the fantastic tour guide, James, and a trip around the “Outback” portion of the park, which included Kangaroos, a camel and Kukaburoos. It was amazing, and we got to see cave formations such as stalactites and stalagmites. I highly recommend it if you are passing through Kentucky.

Tonight we are cooking fajitas and watching a movie in order to relax after a crazy long 60 hours! More information coming soon, so keep checking in!

Abby

We have hit our 6th state! The brave Alyssa has taken the daunting task of the late late night/early morning driving shift and is leading a mostly slumbering van through the roads of Ohio. We made a quick pit stop about 100 miles outside of Columbus and saw a REALLY fat fox (pictures to come later?) but other than that, its been a quiet trip since Pittsburgh. We’re on Schedule for arriving at Horse Cave around noon, and the van is getting quite psyched for our arrival. But for now, more sleep!

Naps, deep thoughts and casual conversation galore! Not much else happened in Jersey, but we’ll be in PA for a while, so keep checking here for some more updates as the night progresses!

Edit: We made it to Pittsburgh! We’re eating at a cute little diner called the EatnPark and then heading to Horse Cave!

We’re in New Jersey! I wasn’t able to update for CT and NY because I was driving. We have quite a while left to go before getting to Kentucky, and all the traffic isn’t helping. Hopefully we’ll be able to make up for lost time during the empty roads of the night!

We had a fantastic brunch in CT with my parents, Craig and Elise, at the Clinton United Methodist Church. There was so much delicious food that everyone left with full bellies AND extra food for the road. We’re certainly glad we stopped!

We ran into some crazy flooding by the highway, and we hope that the people of the area are doing ok. There were some houses that were partially underwater! It was quite the sight.

The ride is going well other than all of that. We’re learning some new car games and bonding, as well as catching up on some much needed sleep! Pictures and more updates to come!

We are getting so psyched for Spring Break! There are just a couple more things we need to get ready, and then we’re heading out at 10 AM on Saturday morning!

Current Weather in Horse Cave, KY: Partly Cloudy, 47 F, with an expected high of 62.

Question: who likes horses? Because we have the cave part of Horse Cave covered. Anyone want the horse part too?

This is an example of a horse from my first trip to KY

We can’t wait!!! Only 4 days left…

Hey Everyone!

In case you were wondering, here’s a quick preview of our trip. It’s actually a short documentary about last year’s trip to Horse Cave, KY.

Enjoy!
